HELP AVAILABLE TO KEEP COUNTY WRAPPED UP THIS WINTER 2013/2014

WRAPPED UP THIS WINTER

The Wrapped Up campaign is being launched again to help keep Northamptonshires most vulnerable people warm and well this winter.

As the cold weather approaches, Northamptonshire County Council and partners including Age UK Northamptonshire, Nene Valley Community Action, Northampton Community Foundation and district and borough councils, are joining forces alongside the Flourish Partnership to help protect vulnerable people most at risk from excessively cold weather and prevents them from needing to be hospitalised.

A hotline 0845 677 2220 will be available from now until March 2014 to respond to calls for help from around the county. Health professionals and volunteers will speak to callers and check in on any older or unwell people that have been flagged up by concerned friends and neighbours.

Councillor Robin Brown, County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health & Wellbeing said "Cold weather can be a real danger to vulnerable household, and with forecasts for the next few months looking harsh, it's likely that once again it will be a hard winter."

"Through the Wrapped Up campaign we are working with charities, community organisations and local authorities to protect those most at risk from excessively cold weather from coming to any harm or needing to be hospitalised."

"Of course, everyone has a part to play and we encourage people to check up on neighbours, relatives and friends who might be struggling to keep warm this winter, particularly the elderly and those with long term health conditions."

"Above all if you're worried anyone you know might need help this winter please get in touch on 0845 677 2220."

Chief Officer, Liam Condron from Age UK Northamptonshire said "Winter can be a very dangerous and distressing time for many older people, especially those who live alone and those who are housebound, so it's vital we do all we can to help older people prepare for the colder weather."

"If there is anyone you know who might be at risk, please encourage them to use the hotline and remember to eat well, stay active, wrap up warm and be safe."

If the weather really takes a turn for the worse, preventing ease of movement around the area, NVCA will be looking to local people and communities to volunteer to support this campaign in their local area. This may include delivering some basic shopping, checking that someone is ok or getting someone to an urgent medical appointment. If you think you can support this campaign please contact NVCA on 01933 396382 or email info@nvca.org.uk.
